25th June 2011
Dear parents,
Greetings.
IMPLEMENTATION OF CONTINUOUS AND COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION (CCE) FROM STD. VI TO X
This letter is to introduce you to the system we implement for the evaluation of students’ all-round (holistic) development. It is a mandatory programme directed by the CBSE, and it is called Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (in short CCE). At the outset I would like to ascertain you that, if properly applied, this evaluation system can predict a student’s future in terms of academics and to a great extend personality aspects. Moreover, there is NO compromise in the seriousness in teaching. Rather, the students will benefit at a greater measure than what they had been used to.
What is CCE? And how are grades arrived at?
CCE is the continuous and comprehensive observation and evaluation of students on their various scholastic and co-scholastic performance and interests. The term comprehensive stands for all round development (holistic) of the students. Thus, when you are informed about your child, please understand that the teachers have done a regular and complete study about the scholastic and certain co-scholastic aspects of the students. The evaluation and subsequent grading are done by a group of teachers after careful, regular observation of the student’s academic performance, general attitude (towards the institution, teachers, peers -- etc), participation and performance in curricular and various co-curricular activities. (The grading scales are provided by the CBSE). Please note that the grades, granted by the school, are the only means for the students to get admission to another school or even to the higher class. Through this programme the regular progress of the student is considered and if necessary remedial measures are applied. Since there is a deviation from the traditional method of only paper and pencil test and also, there are many aspects of the student to be recorded, some general changes are brought in, as mentioned below.
Changes:
1. Only two terms every year: As per the CBSE directive, up to standard X, there will be two academic terms every year (instead of the three terms that we have been practising.) (I term is calculated from June to September and II term from October to March). Each term is divided into FA (Formative Assessment) and SA (Summative Assessment).
2. One Term: One term as per the new system comprises of two FAs and one SA. Since FA is an ongoing programme, stipulating the duration of each FA is not logical. However, for the convenience of passing the information to the parents, we consider 2 months for each FA.
Report Sheet : Another change is in the method of student assessment, recording of the assessment and the intimation to the parents. Also, the assessment is done by groups of teachers in the aspects other than the scholastic. Since the recording of the evaluation must be done in the CBSE prescribed format we may have to change the Progress Report and certain records that will be used to enter the performance details of the student. Further, as the evaluation and grading is done for both scholastic and co-scholastic areas we may bring in some immediate changes in the examination process. Hence, the next progress report (from our school) may be termed as Report Sheet and instead of marks grades will be entered in it. Please note that the Report Sheet shows only the performance details of the previous two months - during the FA. The Report Sheet may be available for the parents every two months.
FA (Formative Assessment): (Normally there will be two FAs in a term and four in an academic year)
We may use the term FA (Formative Assessment) to indicate the period of observation recorded in the Report Sheet. During the FA observation, generally, there will not be many paper and pencil test. However, the teaching and the related matters will be more organized and more purposeful. Through the various WELL PLANNED activities, within and out of the class rooms, the student will be more thorough with the lesson learned and will be more independent to acquire further details about the topics / concepts learned.
SA (Summative Assessment): Normally there will be one SA in a term and two SAs in an academic year. This is the traditional method of paper and pencil test. This year for our school, the SA1 will be in the month of October and the SA2 in March.
Report Book: This is the progress report the students in classes up to Std IX get at the year end . Report Book contains the consolidation of the evaluation done through out the academic year.
Certificate of School Based Assessment (CoSBA) : It is the certificate the std. X students will get in 2012 and std. IX in 2013, when they finish std. X. The CoSBA contains the details of both std. IX and std. X. This certificate is filled by the school and counter signed by the CBSE. CoSBA is necessary for the students to get admission in std. XI in 2011 onwards. (Please refer to the CBSE web site www. cbse.nic. in for further clarification).
This is a student centred programme: The students will be informed about every assessment and be given more opportunities to correct / learn / develop in consultation with the teachers.
Marks allotment is abolished up to std. X: The new system stopped the practice of showing marks in the progress reports. Instead of marks only the grades will be shown with immediate effect. (CBSE Cir. No.39 dated 20.09.2009)
Permanent Record: The grades given by the teachers will be permanent and hence the importance of teachers and that of the school have increased tremendously. The students must be cautioned that the grades they earn now will have much significance for admission to the higher classes.
Frequency of parent information: It is planned (initially) to inform the parents the details of the student performance every 2 months, so that the school, parents and the students will get ample opportunity for interaction.
Regards,
Principal
